Berghaus has packed plenty of features into the Spectrum Microgrid, which features two versions of the proprietary AWL 100 fleece. The main garment is in standard 100-weight, with a two-way stretch.
Under the armpits, however, is a grid-patterned version – actually more tartan than grid – designed to allow cooler air into the stink zone. The double-layer 6.5cm collar features a protective flap to stop the chest zip – a generous 29cm deep for venting – irritating your chin. Both that and the chest pocket’s zip have tabs for ease-of-use when wearing gloves or mitts, though the pocket itself, while impressively large on the inside, has only a small vertical opening; reaching in with a gloved hand might not be easy for some. Cuffs and waist hem are Lycra hemmed; this makes the sleeves a tad uncomfy when they’re rolled up, as the cuffs dig in. Shoulder seams are offset, to avoid pack strap chaffing.
