If you’ve been fortunate enough to have hiked in New Zealand, you’re probably already familiar with Kathmandu, one of the biggest Kiwi outdoor brands. On the strength of this garment, I’d say the company’s arrival here is welcome.

The Microgid Top is one of the lightest reviewed, in one of the most comfortable fleece variants I’ve used; though I haven’t found it to be quite as warm as Classic 100 fabrics, Classic Micro is so soft it could easily be worn as a baselayer. The fleece’s grid pattern helps to trap warmth while allowing moisture to pass through and evaporate. Design-wise, the Microgrid Top is basic: no pocket, simple cuffs, a
7cm-deep collar and a whopping 34cm chest zip for more-than adequate venting. Seams run across the shoulders but are reasonably flat-sewn and have caused no problems under pack straps. The price is surprisingly high for such a minimal garment.
