MOUNTAIN HARDWEAR Micro Grid Zip T (£50)

The Micro Grid Zip T is (on my frame) a fairly snug fit, a fact reflected by sleeves which roll up easily for venting but don’t then sit too comfortably hunched at the elbows, and by the fact that the collar’s just a tad tight when fully zipped up.

A good fabric guard behind the zip prevents rubbing on the chin despite that tightness. Mountain Hardwear’s proprietary Gridlock fabric is, like that on the Rohan and Kathmandu garments, designed to trap body heat more efficiently than more conventional fleece; it would also seem to add to the price slightly. The Gridlock’s laser-cut chest pocket is small and seems designed for a thin mobile phone rather than the warm hat or gloves I like to try to store in any chest pocket. The collar depth – 7.5cm – is perfect to my mind – while the 28cm chest zip offers good ventilation.
