KATHMANDU Polyproylene Gloves (£6.99)

Thin knitted liners offer great dexterity; as proof, I’m typing in these gloves and making no more mistakes than usuak.

However, polypro is slippery and no good at all for handling tools, and while the gloves might add a degree of superlight warmth to your winter arsenal, they’re no match for fleece, softshell or insulation. They’re best left for the likes of fell runners whose need for warmth is usually communicated in their choice of nylon vests and dainty wee shorts for cold days. Polypro gloves might be fine as emergency spares but be aware: polypro can stink!
