BERGHAUS Pro Shell Mountain Peak (£35)

The Pro Shell Mountain Peak – good peak, good ear protection – has undergone a few tweaks since I received this sample to test: gone is the elasticated chin strap, in its place a couple of attachment loops for you to attach your own.

In some ways that’s better – I don’t find elasticated chin straps very comfortable and much prefer the fastening style of the Pàramo cap – as you can fashion your own to suit yourself. New, however, is a useful, unencumbered popper so you can fasten the wired peak out of the way in better weather. The spring/summer 2010 version (and possibly the autumn/winter 2010 version) has a buckled strap at the back for comfortable volume adjustment though the cap comes in a healthy five sizes. The Polartec lining is warm, the Pro Shell fabric boosts that and, of course, contributes waterproofing. Simple, effective, but pricey.
