EXTREMITIES Ice Cap (£30)

TGO Rating 5 stars

With its Paclite shell and thick fleece liner, the Ice Cap is instantly warmer-on than the Montane Featherlite cap. It’s also slightly heavier – though few would baulk at 8g – and £10 more costly, which might prove a bigger crux.

The hat protects the ears and back of the neck well but the flap’s hem itself is elasticated so, unlike the adjustable Montane hat, has to be folded up out of the way when it’s not required. The chin strap is cord rather than elastic so doesn’t dig uncomfortably into your chin when tightened. The peak is wired and can be shaped to permit forward vision, or fastened out of the way. A Velcro-style strap at the rear allows for some volume adjustment but as the hat comes in three sizes – Medium is a tad snug for me – finding the right size shouldn’t be a problem.
