I’ve mentioned elsewhere in this feature that I usually carry a beanie everywhere I walk. Well, the other thing I usually carry is a baseball cap to keep the sun out of my eyes and to prevent any wind-blown waterproof hood flapping across my vision.

And here’s a baseball cap for winter. Fleece-lined, with a DWR-treated (durable water repellent) outer and elasticated pull-cord rear adjustment to ensure it doesn’t blow off your bonce, the Winter Peak 65 is, of course, aimed at runners and other folk who work up a sweat. For winter use, as a humble hillwalker and backpacker, rarely likely to run for a bus let alone a slate coaster, I’d prefer something that protects my ears from cold air and biting winds. While it’s certainly warm, this cap rides pretty high above my ears, and I predict that even the retaining cord might prove insufficient once the winds pick up.
