Several years ago, Lowe Alpine introduced the classic Mountain Cap and sparked a raft of copy-cat designs, many of which can be seen on these pages. Warm, protective and practical, it was the hat to be seen in on the fells.
Inevitably now, seen alongside successors such the Montane Featherlite, the design might seem a little dated but that’s not really the case – it’s a classic that’s still around because it works. Other brands must agree as their own versions are almost identical; the Berghaus model, for example, differs only in its buckle-style adjustment, compared to the Velcro-style on the Lowe Alpine cap. In every other respect – good ear protection, attachments for chin strap, wired and poppered peak, waterproof crown and fleecy lining – the Lowe Alpine model still sets the benchmark for such hats. The only frustration is the fabric strap-encumbered front popper, awkward to use when the hat is worn.
