MONTANE Featherlite Mountain Cap (£20)

This great little cap is an excellent lightweight variation on a traditional mountain cap design.

It’s available in one size only but a single, hand-operated, elasticated pull-cord situated at the rear pulls it in nicely – in fact, being threaded through the inner lining fabric, it pulls the hat in, in similar fashion to the snowskirts found on winter mountaineering jackets. If you’ve a wide head it might prove tight but otherwise it should help prevent the hat flying off in a wind as well as keeping the cold out. The hat is also unusual in having a layer of Primaloft Eco insulation sandwiched between its inner and outer layers of wind and rain-resistant Pertex Microlight. It’s quilted, to prevent the insulation shifting. The cap’s stiffened peak allows good visibility and its elasticated chin cord pulls the earflaps down snugly (although I prefer a non-elasticated one for comfort). Primaloft Eco, by the way, has a high recycled content.
