OUTDOOR DESIGNS MeanieUsh (£16)

TGO Rating 4 stars

Skull cap? It’s an advanced beanie really, featuring two different fabric areas and an elasticated chin cord to prevent it blowing away.

The crown is made of lightweight Polartec Classic 100 – close-knit outer face and fleecier inner – while the area around the forehead, ears and back of head (Outdoor Designs decribes it, much more effectively, as the drop-eared headband section) is in Polartec Windbloc – fleece coupled with a windproof/water-resistant, polyurethane barrier – so the headband keeps the chilling wind off your ears while a knitted microfleece-like inner keeps them warm. Like the Rab Alpine Beanie, the MeanieUsh comes in just one size but the fabrics’ stretch elements should ensure more folk enjoy a perfect fit. While the headband section has a DWR (durable water repellent) treatment, the crown doesn’t, so while you’ll be warm and comfortable you shouldn’t expect to stay dry. The Alpine Beanie feels warmer overall.
