Okay, I give in. Other than the lack of a corresponding trim panel at the rear, I can’t spot any difference between Outdoor Designs’ Topptur Inferno and Rab’s Mountain Cap.

And the design is essentially that of the Lowe Alpine Mountain Cap, right down to the fabric strap that covers the front popper, though the Outdoor Designs and Rab models both use a much softer shell fabric, incorporating waterproof and comparatively more breathable eVent. Insulation is courtesy of Polartec 200 fleece. In both cases, the Large size (equivalent to 59cm) fitted me comfortably with just a small amount of room to spare, easily taken-in by the rear Velcro volume adjustment. Peaks are wired with metal poppers to fasten them away; chin straps are absent though attachment loops are provided for you to fit your own. I assume the weight difference between the two test samples is coincidental.
