ADIDAS Terrex Loft (£85)

Adidas is putting a big effort into outdoor gear, using great technical fabrics but then making odd design decisions. In Terrex Loft, for example, 60g of Primaloft One is a good choice: versatile, warm and breathable.

But placing a left-side pocket that stretches from navel across the side seam, with access by the right hand only, is bizarre. Panelling, visible from the inside, is complex at sides and back, and contributes to the neat overall shape. The cut is slimline across back and torso yet allows a base and microfleece to be layered, and skims the hips. The collar is low bulk but gapes at the neck with no means of cinching it tighter, so warm air escapes; I had to use a zip-neck layer under this. The chinguard is face-fabric, not brushed, so feels slippery when damp from breath or sweat. Overall, a warm, compact jacket at a good price; shame about the pocket.
