TGO Rating 4 stars

Berghaus have used 100g of fill in Chulu although it feels fairly flat, rather than lofted. This level of warmth makes it suitable for wearing on summits and for rest stops, although it doesn’t have a hood, which is unusual for a jacket with this degree of insulation.

Not surprisingly, unless conditions were freezing I found it too warm for wearing on the move. So, I wore it as a summit snug over a base layer and another layer. It was warm, certainly, but the zipped-up collar was too tight at the neck, the cut verged on tight across shoulders and under arms, and I wished for a hood. The chinguard and collar are made from the outer face fabric so feel slippery when damp from sweat or breath. Many will find Chulu too warm as a mid-layer, but the lack of hood and cut, especially the collar, make it less suitable as an outer layer.
