HELLY HANSEN W Cross Insulator (£100)

TGO Rating 3.5 stars

Helly Hansen’s current outdoor garments for women lean closer to fashion than performance. This jacket is typical: well-cut with useful features, but with a few glitches that take it off the ‘genuine outdoor gear’ hanger.

The cut is comfortable, with room to layer while remaining feminine, helped by diagonal panelling. Length is generous, easily covering the hips; jackets this long usually feature a two-way zip but this one is one-way. The side pockets are large enough for hands, but are placed directly under a rucksack hipbelt. The collar is lined with the outer face fabric (as is a logo tab in centre back); this has a DWR finish and felt clammy as soon as I started sweating. Elastane-bound cuffs stretch over small gloves and can be crammed into wide gauntlets. Textured graphics on the shoulders are, well, textured graphics. Warmth is good, but there are better jackets for the money.
