As an outer layer in cold, unpredictable weather, this complex jacket is extraordinary. It looks bulky but feels light, supple and comfortable. Pertex panels are used front, sides and back to chest level, backed with 60g of insulation.
Sleeves, shoulders, upper chest and hood use bonded softshell: diamond-quilt nylon face, membrane, stretch-nylon lining. There’s no insulation under this; the dense softshell is warm enough. It’s also waterproof and durable, while the insulated Pertex provides core warmth and underarm zips release excess heat. I used it walking in winter and skiing, and never overheated. Bulky cuffs have thumbloops; I found these problematic with gauntlet gloves and impossible with mitts. The collar zips up to comfortably protect the mouth. The hood is superb, the rear adjustment cinching it in one move, allowing peripheral vision and removing flapping drawcords. A very interesting jacket for all-day, active use.
