This is a big, shaggy bear of a jacket. I love wearing it casually but I’d never take it up a mountain: it’s too bulky. To me, it’s non-technical wear despite the use of windproof Pertex Endurance fabric.
Insulation is provided by high-loft polyester fleece which traps warmth and is lovely over a base layer. I tried it over a mid-layer but the fleeces stuck to each other… There is a plethora of pockets but the crucial ones, side pockets, are placed underneath a rucksack hipbelt. Sensibly, these have a brushed lining; you’d never get wet or gloved hands in or out if they were lined with the high-loft fleece. Elasticated cuffs stretch over liner gloves but the sleeves are bulky so wide gauntlet gloves are needed if the mercury dives. Frostline is a fun jacket and I’ve worn it a lot, but it’s too much for a rucksack and too warm as a wear-all-day garment.
