Smartwool was the company who modernised outdoor socks with the first made from merino wool. The Light Hiking socks have been my most worn three-season socks for several years and have proved durable and comfortable.
They have light terry loop cushioning on the ankle, lower foot and toes, a thin flat-knitted upper foot section and rib-knit legs. There’s a stretch arch band for a snug fit, a flat offset toe seam, a Y heel gore and an elastic cuff. The socks are quite thin and so good for use in close-fitting footwear like trail shoes. The thinness also means they dry quite quickly when damp. I’ve found them cool in warm weather and warm enough in spring and autumn. Smartwool also makes the Medium Hiking Crew, with thicker terry loops throughout the foot, for colder weather or when a thicker sock is needed to fill out boots.
