LOWE ALPINE Paradigm (£85)

TGO Rating 4.5 stars

Lowe Alpine’s Paradigm Pants are good simple soft shell trousers. The fabric is very stretchy, brushed on the inside, breathable, reasonably wind resistant and quick drying. In strong winds and steady rain, overtrousers are needed while in sub-zero weather overtrousers or long johns are needed for warmth.

Much of the time though the pants can be worn on their own. The fabric is medium weight – not as thin as the Mountain Hardwear or Patagonia fabrics and not as thick as Rohan or Outdoor Research. I guess they might be a little warm in summer for those who run hot like me. Ease of movement is excellent due to the high stretch plus shaped knees and crotch panel. They are quite close-fitting but there is ample room for long underwear. As general purpose trousers for year-round use these are pretty good, especially given the price. The fabric seems durable and should stand up to scrambling and climbing. The ankle zips are quite short and I’m not sure they are needed on trousers like this, but that is a minor criticism.
