These are made from top of the range Schoeller fabrics that are comfortable, breathable and tough. While not waterproof they absorb barely any water – it just beads up and runs off – and so dry very fast.
Overtrousers are only needed in heavy rain. Wind resistance is good but the Champ Pants aren’t fully windproof and strong cold winds do cut through them. On cool autumn days the warmth was fine, on sub-zero winter days they weren’t warm enough if the wind was blowing and only just warm enough when it wasn’t. Under overtousers they were fine in blizzards. I suspect they will be too warm on hot summer days despite the ‘Cool Black’ treatement designed to stop them absorbing heat in the sun. The fabric is very stretchy and there are shaped knees and a crotch panel. Despite the stretch the fit is quite loose. The patch pocket will take a map, though it pokes out of the top. The knees are reinforced with the same fabric as on the inside of the ankles and should stand up to scrambling well. Good trousers but they are quite expensive.
