Montane’s Terra trousers have been my favourite May to October legwear for several years. The new XT 2.0 version is designed for cold weather and lined with a soft wicking fabric that is perforated round the waist, on the front of the thighs and down the back of the legs for breathability, and non-perforated on the seat and front of the legs for warmth.
The outer EPIC fabric is windproof, very water resistant and reasonably breathable, though it is possible to get sweaty despite long side zips. Overtrousers should only be necessary in very heavy rain. The trousers are warm and I’ve found them fine in windy sub-zero temperatures. I imagine that much above 5ºC they are likely to be too warm. The fabric doesn’t stretch but the fit is roomy with a crotch panel and shaped knees so freedom of movement is good. Cordura reinforcements on the seat and knees should aid durability. One of the warmest pairs of trousers tested and suitable for wearing alone in all but the most extreme winter weather, these are excellent for cold weather hillwalking.
