OUTDOOR RESEARCH Credo (£125)

At a glance the Credos look much like other stretch nylon soft shell trousers. Examine them closely and differences that make them more functional appear. The outer fabric is smoother and the seams sealed, which makes them much more water and wind resistant.

The zips are reversed for water resistance and the thigh pocket is lined with the outer material. Overtrousers would only be needed in the heaviest rain. Snow just slides off. And it’s for snowy conditions they are designed, the fleece inner making them very warm. Breathability is good but overheating is possible in calm conditions. Leg vents would be useful. The cut is quite slim and the knees aren’t shaped. However the fabric stretch and the crotch panel mean there’s no restriction. I’m not so keen on the pockets though. The two front ones are quite small and the zips aren’t angled much, which means you can catch your hands on them easily; the thigh pocket is round the back of the leg. But as standalone cold weather trousers the Credos are a good choice. though.
