For these, Rab uses a lightweight version of Power Shield with an open-weave wicking Powerdry lining that is said to be suitable for year-round use. Power Shield has a perforated membrane for windproofing with breathability.
This works well – windproof in all but the coldest, strongest winds and a little more breathable than fabrics like Windstopper, though more sweaty at times than non-membrane fabrics. This light version of Power Shield is still quite warm – I’ve found it fine at around freezing with a stiff breeze. In hot weather it would probably be too warm despite the thigh vents. The trousers are also almost waterproof so overtrousers are rarely needed. Power Shield doesn’t stretch as much as some other soft shell fabrics but enough that when combined with the shaped knees and crotch panel freedom of movement isn’t restricted. The cut allows enough room for long underwear in severe cold. The price is low compared with the Mountain Equipment Windstopper trousers, which have a similar performance, making these good value.
