Montane’s simple Featherlite Smock is a basic windshirt with few features. It’s very light – only the similar GoLite Wisp weighs less – and packs into a tiny bundle.
The Pertex Microlight fabric is the same as on the Lite-Speed jacket and is windproof, very breathable and fairly water-resistant when new. The chest zip is two-way so you can undo it for ventilation without having to unzip it at the neck. The high collar keeps your neck snug when the zip is fastened. The Medium size fits over a thin fleece comfortably. The Featherlite is longer than the Wisp with an extended back. The elasticated hem doesn’t ride up and stays firmly under a rucksack hipbelt. There’s little to choose between the Featherlite and the Wisp – the former is a little longer, the latter a bit lighter weight. Either would be fine for the ultralight backpacker or for carrying just in case a wind shell was needed.
