MONTANE Lite-Speed (£50)

TGO Rating 4.5 stars

The original Lite-Speed has been one of my favourite windshirts for several years and I gave it a Best Buy rating back in 2006. The latest version has a collar in which the hood can be stored, an unnecessary addition in my view.

The collar does have a nice soft chinguard though. The original hood was double layer too, which gave better protection than the current single layer one. The hood fits well and moves with the head. The large chest pocket is excellent and easily holds a map. The Lite-Speed is slightly longer than most windproofs, which provides a little more protection. The thin fabric is surprisingly durable and reasonably water repellent when new. A little mesh stuffsack with mini karabiner weighing 14 grams is provided. I just stuff the jacket inside its hood or pocket. The Lite-Speed is quite light, though a little heavier than the first version. It’s a good jacket – but the original was better.
