Back in the early 2000s Patagonia made an excellent lined windproof called the Zephur. Disappointingly it was dropped a few years ago.
It’s good to see that Patagonia has returned to this practical design with the Alpine Wind, a lightweight windproof with a fine mesh wicking lining. The Alpine Wind is about as warm as a light weight fleece as well as being windproof and breathable. There’s a reasonably roomy chest pocket and two lower pockets that are covered by a pack hipbelt. The underarm panels are made of a stretch fabric but it doesn’t give much and I didn’t notice these making any difference. The weight is reasonable and this is a functional jacket for autumn to spring use. It’s too warm for me in summer. There’s nothing really wrong with it but the very similar Mountain Equipment Microtherm Alpine weighs less, is more comfortable and has a better design – and would be my choice of the two.
