Originating in the world of rafting and kayaking sports sandals have been adopted by walkers who enjoy a sense of lightness and fresh air around their feet. Some, like TGO gear editor Chris Townsend, even wear them for hillwalking and backpacking.

Despite the lightweight revolution many hillwalkers and backpackers are more comfortable wearing stiffer, heavier boots that are crampon compatible during the winter months when snow and ice make underfoot conditions difficult.

These low-slung, comparatively lightweight shoes are becoming increasingly popular for leisure use as well as lightweight sojourns into the hills. Many walkers now use them instead of boots during the seasons of spring, summer and autumn.

Probably the most common category of hillwalkers' footwear these boots are used for spring, summer and autumn conditions. Having said that, many of the models can be used in good, snowfree conditions in winter as well.
