PATAGONIA Izaak (£70)

The Izaaks are closed-toe sandals that protect more of the foot than they leave uncovered. Unlike other closed-toe sandals they don’t fasten with laces but with combined Velcro straps and clip buckles.

I can’t see why both of these are needed. Rigid side pieces support the instep strap and the heel is stiffened. The fit is reasonably wide but I didn’t need to tighten the forefoot strap. The sandals are comfortable and secure. The big toe bumper is hard and protective. The footbed is shaped and has a roughened surface and a pattern of grooves to prevent slipping. Cushioning is fine and the grip from the Vibram sole excellent. The sole flexes at the forefoot but is rigid side to side. The weight and price are both high. If you want maximum coverage from a sandal I guess the Izaak is okay but it defeats most of the point of a sandal in my opinion.
