Generally speaking a pack of 30 litres capacity is usually fine for summer and perhaps a slightly larger pack – up to 40 litres, for winter use. Make sure a winter pack has loops for carrying an ice axe.

Weekend Packs

These will normally be used by backpackers and should be large enough to carry a lightweight tent, sleeping bag, cooking equipment and food. Many ultralight backpacking packs are tiny in size and yet are capable of carrying a consiserable amount of gear. However, ultralight packs usually don't carry very comfortably with loads of over 20 lbs/9kg.

Backpacking Packs

Because of the huge range of equipment that people carry nowadays, from ultralightweight loads to slackpacking loads, there is an enormous range of backpacking packs available. Another consideration is how long your backpacking trip will be. Generally speaking, longer trips, where you may have to carry several days food, will require bigger packs.
