The Lair 1 is an unusual tarp that tapers to the rear, which is shaped like the back of a ridge tent and is designed to be pitched down to the ground – ideal for British conditions.
The width at the front is good too, enabling the Lair 1 to be pitched with the edges down to the ground while leaving enough room to sit up. I’d rather the Lair 1 was a little longer though, so that I could leave a gap between my sleeping bag and the entrance in case of rain. While it lends itself to a tapered ridge shape the Lair 1 can be pitched in other configurations. There are three pegging points along the rear and front edges and one on each side, plus one at the top of the rear. I’d like to see more loops on each side. Guylines are provided at front and back. Y-shaped pegs are provided but I found they wouldn’t fit through all the rather small attachment loops. Lighter, smaller pegs would be adequate anyway. The Lair 1 is very light and just adequate for coping with storms, as long as it’s pitched rear into the wind. However I’d rather have more protection and space and carry the extra weight of the Lair 2 (450g with pegs), which is 345cm long and 243cm wide at the front.
