HILLEBERG Tarp 5 UL (£69)

As you’d expect from Hilleberg this is a well-made tarp. It has reinforced attachment points with rings for pegs and adjustable guylines.

It’s very long, so it’s easy to get a sleeping bag and mat fully under cover, but it’s not wide enough to peg the sides and rear down to the ground in a storm and still have space inside. That means it needs to be used with a bivvy bag. There are only eight attachment points round the edges too, with just one on each long side, and none on the body. Another half dozen – two more on each long side and two on top – plus another 40cm of width and this would be an excellent tarp. The weight is low but another 100g wouldn’t hurt if it meant more width.
