The Outwell Tarp is intended for car camping. It comes with heavy steel poles and pegs in a package weighing 4kg. However the tarp itself is light enough to carry and roomy enough to provide ample protection for one in a storm.
It’s not as roomy as it seems, as each side is curved, but it’s still far bigger than any of the others tested. Three sides can be pegged to the ground, with a short pole inserted in the back to hold it up, leaving plenty of room to sit up and cook under cover. The length means the sleeping bag can be kept well inside the door and out of reach of spray, and it can be pitched as a pyramid. There are six reinforced attachment points with thick guylines attached, two of them double. These guylines could be replaced with lighter, thinner ones. A few more attachment points would be welcome; I made one for the rear pole by wrapping a double guyline round the top to hold it in place. The fabric is thicker than the sil-nylon of the other tarps. All seams are taped. A good buy at £50.
