MARMOT PreCip Jacket (£80)

TGO Rating 3.5 stars

Light and packable, the PreCip may appeal to those conscious of weight as well as price. The front zip features a double storm flap, and the hand pockets are wellpositioned and easily accessed when you’re wearing a pack hipbelt. They’re also mesh-lined which aids moisture venting, as do the lengthy pit zips – this is one of only a few jackets here with that feature.

The PreCip provides slightly better backside cover than the two smock designs (with which I’d say it most closely equates) and while it felt warmer it also seemed a tad more breathable; only the hood seemed to get noticeably clammy, the baggier sleeves (which don’t restrict arm movement at all) slightly damp. Getting a perfect hood fit proved rather tricky: the peak clumped around my face and the hood didn’t move well with my head; the hook-andloop rear volume adjustment tab ripped out when I bent my head forward.
