HAGLÖFS Roca Q Pant (£200)

TGO Rating 3.5 stars

These are water repellent, not waterproof. As soft shell pants, Roca Q are designed to withstand damp, cold conditions (but not proper rain), with waterproof–ish patches on the bum and knees, and reinforced ankle guards.

Despite the water-repellent tag, they were tested in hard rain and, when new, didn’t let a drop through. Things changed after a couple of wash cycles but once I’d reproofed them (using a spray-on reproofer; keep that stuff away from the lining or it affects wicking) they repelled light rain again. Breathability is surprisingly good despite the Windstopper membrane; venting through the zips really helps. They are also comfortable against bare skin, thanks to the brushed polyester lining. The cut, as usual with Haglöfs, is long and slim. Not many women have a 32” inside leg (Haglöfs claims 31”, I measured 32”) and the ankle arrangement is so complex (see specification panel) that they can’t be shortened. Features include detachable braces, thigh-high laminated side zips that vent, and assorted pockets. Roca Q is a technical pant that circumvents the need for overtrousers in cold, damp conditions but you need long legs if they’re to fit.
