Marmot has covered all bases with this overtrouser: the size and leg length options are comprehensive. It’s a straightforward garment, with an elasticated waist and static drawcord.

Unusually for a lightweight, coated pant there are two zipped side pockets with mesh linings. I don’t find Precip very breathable; condensation builds up quickly. I’d put it on a par with Mountain Hardwear’s Conduit Silk and Patagonia’s H2No. The knee-height zip opens fine but the fabric width around the knee is narrow, so pulling these pants off over big winter boots is a struggle (I found it easier pulling them on). It’s okay with mid-weight boots and trail shoes. The ankle has a stud so the zip can be opened for venting without the hem flapping. There is also a length of narrow shockcord for tightening the hem around a boot cuff. Precip pants are widely available, light enough to carry and likely to fit most sizes; just don’t expect them to stay dry inside if you’re walking hard.

A full side zip version (£60) is also available.
