PATAGONIA Full Zip Rain Shadow Pants (£90)

These pants are fabulous. The very low weight of 210g includes laminated full side zips, so these pants can be quickly whipped on or off regardless of footwear, without getting mud on the inside of the trousers.

The waist includes wide gripper elastic at the back to stop the pants sliding around, a shockcord adjuster at the front and studs over the zips. These studs allow the zips to be used as thigh vents; same applies at the ankles. Knees are articulated and the fit is relaxed; I found them comfortable over soft shell pants as well as leggings. Despite the pants’ inside leg being longer than mine, the very supple fabric meant they still fitted neatly. Elastication at the ankle is quite loose and fits over big boot tops, although is a little sloppy over lighter footwear and would benefit from a gaiter in foul weather. Breathability is on a par with other coated pants: not good, but better than plastic.
