RAB Women’s Vidda Pant (£100)

Rab has gone for proven, foul-weather three-layer technology.

The result is pants which tip the scale at about half a banana more than the lightest coated overtrousers, but which are noticeably more breathable. Vidda features a thigh-high laminated zip backed by a generous flap; this length of zip is the most efficient at venting. It also vents well from the ankle, courtesy of a stud which holds the trouser closed, and a shockcord which cinches the ankle around the top of a boot or shoe. This shockcord is fiddly, but you only adjust it once. It also allows the length (which changes according to the pant size) to be tweaked. The waist is very simple – elastic plus a narrow shockcord and small toggle. Articulated knees, a well-designed crotch and a relaxed cut make the trousers comfortable over leggings or trousers. There are no pockets or scuff guards but they would only add to the weight. One of my favourite overtrousers. The men’s version is Bergen.
