SPRAYWAY Women’s Mountain Rainpant (£100)

I find Sprayway’s women’s trouser cut narrow at the hips and thighs (and very wide below the knee), so went up a size for the test pants. New this winter, these use Gore’s three-layer ProShell, which I found breathable and comfortable.

The fabric is a little stiffer (and noisier) than the three-layer eVENT used by Rab but worked well in wet weather. The waistband has a soft brushed lining. The leg zip finishes at the knee and is wide enough to allow big boots through; this is helped by the very wide (verging on excessive) fabric allowance at the lower leg. A Velcro tab at the ankle pulls the cuff closer if the leg length is too long; they could be shortened a little without losing the tab. These are useful, weather protective overtrousers that have no obvious points of criticism (bar that lower leg width) but given the choice between these and Rab’s Vidda, which is the same price with longer leg zips, lower weight, a better overall cut and similar performance, I’d take the Vidda.
