TGO Rating: 4.5 stars (Recommended)

If your winter walking doesn’t take you up big hills – so you don’t need proper crampons – but you still have to deal with icy paths and slippery snow then Micro Spikes look a good choice.

They also make a light option for carrying in the hills when there might be a bit of snow or ice to deal with but you don’t want to carry crampons. They consist of a stretchy upper that fits over the shoe and eight very short spikes linked by flexible chains. Fitting them to different footwear is easy. They are held in place by the tension of the stretched uppers and there are four sizes. I can think of several instances in recent years when these would have been useful, such as icy forest paths last winter, and I expect to get much use from them.
