Interest on TGO's Facebook page in the Grower's Cup, a new product which its makers say delivers gourmet coffee without the need for bulky equipment or filters, prompted TGO's Gear Editor and coffee devotee Chris Townsend to try it out. Here is his verdict...
As coffee it’s excellent – a good bitter flavour and a nice aftertaste. However for outdoors use there are some drawbacks. I can imagine taking a packet or two on a day walk or as a luxury on a backpacking trip but the weight and bulk (not to mention the price) would put me off carrying more than that so I would be carrying coffee granules or sachets as well, and then feeling let down because they didn’t taste as good!
After use the packet – with wet coffee grounds - weighs 101 grams. The coffee also cools down quickly as the packet isn’t insulated. After 8 minutes in a room at 14C the coffee was cool enough to drink as soon as poured. In cold weather some way of insulating the packet would be needed.
