I’ve worn these on many occasions in the last few months, not least of all in the Cairngorms where I was training for the Summer Mountain Leader albeit in October. I was not surprised at all to see my instructor wearing them as well: nothing gets through these. We’ve featured them before and given them our Best Buy. It’s made from Nikwax Analogy Waterproof material and with a durable water repellent treatment.
There are two side pockets and long thigh vents. One criticism often aimed at Páramo is the warmth of its material, but didn’t find this a problem below 10C, especially with the vents. They are also very comfortable to wear as regular trousers, but I’ve worn them over a lightweight walking trouser too when it’s really cold. There’s a zip fly with a press-stud fastening and it comes with a belt. There’s also some ankle adjustment.
The fit is good, and the articulated knees certainly help and there’s little stretch. After several months, there is clear sign of wear and a small tear where I was doing some rather unglamorous scrambling. There’s a stronger fabric around the thighs and knees, and most of the seat. The wear is clear above this where it reverts to softer material. Perhaps the stronger material that didn’t even flinch at the wear, needs to extend higher. I’d also worry about them tearing if they got caught on crampons.
That said, these are still the only waterproof trousers I wear!
Pros: Waterproofness, feel of material, thigh vents, size options
Cons: Softer material can wear
