Chris Townsend reviews a lightweight PFC-free waterproof designed for trail running from French brand CimAlp.
This review is part of our ultralight waterproofs gear guide, and was first published in the May 2019 issue of The Great Outdoors.
CimAlp is a French outdoor clothing brand, and this is the first of their garments I’ve tried. Designed for trail running, it has a minimalist design and a ‘slim, ergonomic fit’ that means I need a Large to wear it over an insulating layer. The fabric breathes well and is comfy to wear. It has a slight stretch.
The hood fits well and moves with the head. It’s elasticated at the back and at the sides of the face but it’s not adjustable, so the lightly stiffened peak can blow back off the forehead.
There’s only one pocket – a small one on the chest that’s big enough for a smartphone but not a map. It has a hole for an earphone cord.
The front opening has a stud fastening at the chest, meaning the zip can be left undone for venting without the jacket flapping. This neat touch works well.
The cuffs have thumb loops, but they’re elasticated, which reduces ventilation. The hem is only elasticated at the sides, which stops the slight drop tail riding up.
The very breathable fabric is the Storm 2H Pro’s best feature. Otherwise it’s an okay jacket if you don’t mind the lack of pockets and are happy with the hood.
