Neoshell is currently my favourite waterproof/breathable membrane fabric so I was delighted to find it in a pair of gaiters. It certainly does make them very breathable. The fabric alone isn’t enough though. The design needs to be good too and with these gaiters it is. The Neoshell fabric stretches so the gaiters can be close-fitting without being restrictive. There’s no zip, just a wide Velcro strap so getting them on and off is easy and you can adjust boot laces quickly. To help the gaiters stay in place there are sticky silicone strips round the top and the inner heel. There’s also a drawcord closure at the top with the cordlock at the side rather than the front so it isn’t felt when you kneel or step high. The lace hook is reversed, making it easier to clip round laces than a standard one. The underfoot strap is made from a rubberised material that feels tough. It adjusts by Velcro straps inside the gaiter, which is neat but not as easy to use as a buckle and strap. The lower section is made of thicker fabric than the upper but it’s not as thick as on heavier gaiters.

For hillwalking and backpacking these are excellent gaiters. For mountaineering or bushwhacking heavier gaiters will probably prove more durable but for most walkers these light gaiters should be fine.
