The Ranger would be my second choice after the Expedition. It’s not quite as long and doesn’t have romer scales or anti-slip pads but it does have a magnifi er, declination scales and the two most useful map scales plus Silva’s new rubberised bezel grip, which is easy to turn when wearing gloves, and an easily detached lanyard (though I can’t see a need for this). And while not as long as the Expedition’s the straight edge of the Ranger’s base plate is longer than those on any of the other compasses tested. At £7 less than the Expedition and £5 more than the Field, the Ranger is arguably better value than either of them, in particular the Field which lacks many of the Ranger’s features. Indeed, if you don’t need romer scales the Ranger is the best of the compasses reviewed with just the right features for hillwalking.
