As part of our May 2021 review of dehydrated backpacking meals, Alex Roddie reviews this offering from Trek ‘n Eat.
Trek ’n Eat provide a good selection of backpacking meals at attractive prices, and this one is the cheapest of those tested at only £6. Over a long trip small price savings will add up, so it’s a major factor to consider. I tasted their Wild Mushroom Ragout, made with porcini mushrooms, vegetables, and noodles.
The packaging is similar to those from Expedition Foods, with a tear-off point halfway down, but the instructions are in a smaller font and far less readable at a glance. At only 8 minutes specified, and 6 minutes in practice, rehydration time was excellent – and, again, no crunchy bits when it was time to eat.
Flavour really surprised me. I wasn’t expecting much at the price point, but I found it delicious, with a lovely mushroomy mouthfeel. At 620 Kcal, you get a decent amount of energy per pack, too, although it’s worth mentioning that calories/weight ratio is the poorest of the meals tested. In real terms this won’t mean much unless carrying food for long periods at a time.
There are also more additives and processed ingredients than you’ll find with the more expensive meals tested, and salt content is moderately high. However, the price is good, and the flavour is excellent.
